CENTRE OPENING

The Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) has been established by The University of Western Australia (UWA), Curtin University of Technology (Curtin) and the exploration industry, with key funding support from the Government of Western Australia, through the Centres of Excellence in Science and Innovation Program.
CET is located within the School of Earth and Geographical Sciences at UWA and commenced operation when the Director, Dr Cam McCuaig took up his appointment on 9 August 2005.
This new Centre is aimed squarely at the mineral industry's need to increase the discovery of new mineral deposits. Its five integrated research themes reflect the belief that more effective targeting, coupled with independent action to reduce the risks of value destruction, will deliver outcomes that can significantly improve the risk : reward ratio.
The Centre is led by a Director with strong industry experience and has five key objectives:
- Develop practical technologies to increase the effectiveness of brownfields and greenfields exploration, especially in covered terranes, and at depth
- Develop methods for integration of the business and science of exploration through improved assessment of risk and value
- Advance the science of exploration targeting in close collaboration with other research groups and industry
- Train new generations of postgraduates with skills directly relevant to exploration targeting
- Develop demand for the Centre's outputs, at the State, national and international levels, to provide sustaining revenue over the long term
When fully established, CET will include more than 20 academic staff, research fellows and support staff. Postgraduate students will include about 12PhD students and 16 MSc students. The objective is to achieve a postgraduate population of about 20 PhD students and 30 MSc students.
CET Vision
To be recognised as the global leader in research excellence, innovation, education and training in exploration targeting and to advance the State of Western Australia as the premier location for successful mineral exploration and investment over the long term.
